If you’ve noticed a new face on Planet Detroit’s social media, it’s Maya Moore, who is focused on producing video as she interns with our newsroom for the summer.

Moore graduated from Michigan State University in May with a bachelor’s in journalism with a concentration in international reporting; a minor in philosophy and law; and bachelor’s in public policy with a minor in peace and justice studies.

She serves on the board of the State News in the student body position and previously worked as an intern at WKAR Public Media and as a student assistant in the Michigan attorney general’s office.

The internship is made possible by MSU’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism.

Measles outbreak the worst in US for more than 3 decades

Detroit and the counties of Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne are far below the 95% community vaccination rate the CDC says is needed to prevent measles outbreaks.

“I’m super excited to join the team at Planet Detroit, where I can continue growing as a journalist while helping to make critical environmental news more accessible and relevant to the communities we serve,” Moore said.

She studied environmental science communication abroad in Peru while at MSU.

“I’m excited to put that experience into practice by combining my journalism background with new media skills I’ll be developing here at Planet Detroit!” Moore said.

Nina Ignaczak, Planet Detroit’s founder and executive editor, welcomed Moore to the newsroom.

“We’re thrilled to have someone of Maya’s caliber join our newsroom for the summer and help us strategize around new engagement approaches to broaden the audience for our journalism,” she said. “We’re grateful to MSU’s Knight Center for providing the support to make this internship possible.”
