Krainz Park
Located next to the Legacy Charter Academy at 18501 Healy Street sits Krainz Park, a medium sized play area shaded by majestic trees featuring 2 basketball courts, 2 playgrounds, picnic areas, softball/baseball diamond, and paved walking path.
Detroit played a critical role in the war effort during World War II and this park was named after Silver Star Recipient Captain John Krainz, an officer in the U.S. Army who fought and died in service. African-American residents living in the nearby Sojourner Truth Projects during the 1940’s also contributed greatly to the war effort as weapons manufacturers and had to deal with some of the worst forms of harassment and racism seen in American History. Residents of Sojourn also contributed to the culture of Detroit in the form of music as groups like The Dramatics and the Floaters originated from The Sojourner Truth Projects.
Out at the park today I met some young men taking summer classes at the nearby Legacy Academy. The boys were glad to be finished with their studies and head to the park each day to enjoy their summer vacation. Math and reading were difficulties they struggled with but much rather be playing basketball or swinging they told me.
