Planet Detroit has officially moved into its first-ever dedicated office space at the Green Garage in Midtown Detroit — a milestone that reflects both our growth and our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Housed in a sustainably rehabilitated 1921 auto showroom, the Green Garage is home to a diverse community of nearly 50 mission-driven businesses prioritizing environmental sustainability, community well-being, and economic resilience.

“As a local newsroom grounded in environmental justice and sustainability, it feels meaningful to take this next step in a space that embodies those same values,” said Nina Ignaczak, Planet Detroit’s founder and editor. “We’re thrilled to join a community that shares our commitment to people, planet, and place.”

The Green Garage, which opened in 2011, grew out of the Great Lakes Green Initiative and was envisioned as both a demonstration center for sustainability in an urban setting and a coworking space for socially conscious professionals. Its founders, Tom and Peggy Brennan, led a three-year effort to deconstruct and rebuild the space using reclaimed materials and energy-efficient systems, creating one of the greenest historic buildings in the Midwest.

Metro Detroiters woke up to poor air quality Wednesday morning, with commercial monitors showing air in the Air Quality Index’s unhealthy range in some locations. A temperature inversion is responsible for Wednesday morning’s stagnant air and pollution, although low winds contributed to the problem, said Alec Kownacki, a meteorologist with the Michigan Department of Environment,…

How canceled clean energy projects are costing Michigan — and what happens next

On a gray December morning at the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, the view across the river told one story about Michigan’s economic future: massive cargo terminals, a waterfront humming with diesel engines, and, on the horizon, the Windsor skyline. Matt Piper, community manager at the Green Garage, welcomed Planet Detroit to the space. “We are overjoyed to welcome Planet Detroit to the Green Garage! Their deep commitment to climate and environmental justice-focused journalism make them a natural fit for our sustainability-minded coworking community,” he said.

“We’re proud that the Planet Detroit team can do their great work and continue to grow at the Green Garage now, when support for our independent journalists is more important than ever.”

For Planet Detroit, moving into the Green Garage offers more than just physical space — it offers alignment with a community that shares our mission to serve the public through solutions-focused reporting on climate, health, and equity.

We’re excited for what’s ahead and grateful to our readers, funders, and community partners who made this possible. We look forward to welcoming you to our new home soon.
