Planet Detroit has officially moved into its first-ever dedicated office space at the Green Garage in Midtown Detroit — a milestone that reflects both our growth and our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Housed in a sustainably rehabilitated 1921 auto showroom, the Green Garage is home to a diverse community of nearly 50 mission-driven businesses prioritizing environmental sustainability, community well-being, and economic resilience.
“As a local newsroom grounded in environmental justice and sustainability, it feels meaningful to take this next step in a space that embodies those same values,” said Nina Ignaczak, Planet Detroit’s founder and editor. “We’re thrilled to join a community that shares our commitment to people, planet, and place.”
The Green Garage, which opened in 2011, grew out of the Great Lakes Green Initiative and was envisioned as both a demonstration center for sustainability in an urban setting and a coworking space for socially conscious professionals. Its founders, Tom and Peggy Brennan, led a three-year effort to deconstruct and rebuild the space using reclaimed materials and energy-efficient systems, creating one of the greenest historic buildings in the Midwest.
