Many Detroiters experienced power outages due to storms this summer. Planet Detroit has provided in-depth coverage on multiple widespread power outages in DTE’s service area in 2026, raising questions about the reliability of the power grid in Southeast Michigan.

Severe storms ahead of Labor Day weekend caused as many as 300,000 customers to lose power in Metro Detroit, according to WJBK-TV.

The storm included a tornado touchdown on the east side of Detroit — the first to hit the city since 1997.

On July 3, storms that tore through Southeast Michigan caused nearly 400,000 DTE Energy customers to lose power.
