Clayton Cortez, a lifelong Southwest Detroit resident and multimedia journalist, is working to address pollution, flooding, and blight in one of Michigan’s most environmentally burdened communities. Through neighborhood organizing and digital tools, he’s connecting residents with resources to improve public health and quality of life.

Skyler Leslie grew up Downriver and now lives and works in District 6 in Detroit. With backgrounds in environmental justice and museum studies, she explores intersections of public history, environmental justice, natural area management, and heritage tourism in the Great Lakes. Driven by a desire to give back to the communities and places that raised her, joining the Neighborhood Reporting Lab will help her to to build her writing skills, deepen community connections, and provide a platform to uplift underrepresented stories.
