Advocates in Detroit believe resistance to changing the state’s permitting process is likely to repeat itself in Detroit, where residents have concerns about the health impacts from the Stellantis expansion.
More than 30 residents spoke in opposition of the project Monday morning; no one spoke in support. Roughly 120 people attended the hearing online and 25 in person.
“You need to have people from Detroit to be a part of these conversations taking leadership in the things that we’re talking about,” said Diamond Spratling, founder of Girl Plus Environment.
The bills would offer utility rebates for solar and battery storage and require operators to recognize those systems as grid assets. Low-income customers would receive higher incentives.
Black Bottom was a predominantly African American neighborhood situated on the city’s near east side, just northeast of downtown Detroit. It emerged in the early 20th century and was named after the dark, fertile soil found in the area.
